Our Bebe Dolls are produced in a workshop on the island of Atauro off the coast of Dili in East Timor.
46 women work as a co-operative and are taught sewing skills to make a variety of products.
The group was started 4 years ago by an Italian lady Piera who now devotes her life to supporting these women. They have a number of treadle sewing machines and make dolls, toys and bags to sell to tourists and for overseas markets.
This regular work has greatly improved the women’s lives who before this would have had no opportunity to earn money.
The dolls are sewn from Tais fabric which is the traditional weaving that women in other villages in Timor prepare on a simple back-strap loom. The faces are made from reclaimed T- shirt material.
